The Antonius Chapel on the Oese - history, significance and current use
It was built in 1704 and is dedicated to St. Anthony of Padua, Anthony the Hermit is venerated as a secondary patron saint. The chapel square is crossed by the River Oese, which rises a few hundred meters above the chapel. A second spring, the Antoniusquelle, rises at the northern end of the square, which flows into the Oese after a few meters and strengthens it considerably.
The Kluskapelle is also popular with hikers and cyclists. Large, shady trees, the babbling of the Oese and various seating options invite you to linger. The hiking tours Landdrosteweg and Annette-von-Droste-Hülshoff-Weg as well as the Bad Driburg Bike Tour 2 and Bad Driburger Radtour 3 lead directly past the chapel.
The last major restoration of St. Anthony's Chapel took place between 1909 and 1910; the altar (Franz Heise, Warburg) and the windows (Carl Hertel, Düsseldorf) also date from this period. Further renovations are still carried out regularly today, most recently the renovation of the vestibule in 2009. The outdoor altar on the chapel square was erected in 1962 and extended in 2007.
