Rare sacred art preserved in Neuenheerse
On the path from the former collegiate church to the Kluskapelle chapel, there are six double wayside shrines from the Baroque period in Neuenheerse - a rare form of sacred art in North Rhine-Westphalia. Each wayside shrine has a niche on the front and back, in which lead pictures were originally displayed. These depicted the seven sufferings on the outward journey and the seven joys of Mary on the return journey.
The exact date of origin and the sculptor are unknown. It is assumed that the lead images were melted down during the Seven Years' War. The wayside shrines are now on the list of monuments of the town of Bad Driburg and are considered a special feature in northern Germany.
These stone testimonies to faith are not only religious objects, but also part of the region's cultural heritage. They can be discovered on a walk through the rural surroundings and offer an insight into the spiritual life of past times.
The restoration was carried out on the initiative of the EGV Neuenheerse department with the support of the monument authority and with the support of the town of Bad Driburg, the Foundation for Monument Protection, the state of North Rhine-Westphalia and committed citizens.
