These "hollow lanes" (from Friedrich Schiller's "William Tell") are the result of centuries of human use - ox carts, carriages and cattle drives, for example, went from the farm to the pasture and vice versa - always on the same paths. Footfall and erosion deepened these paths. Hornbeams were planted to improve the stability of the embankments and can still be found along many hollow paths today. Hollow paths are not only witnesses of historical land use that are worth protecting, but are also often lifelines and retreats for many animals and plants due to their vegetation.
