In the course of the regional EXPO initiative OWL carried out in 2000 and the 1st "Regionale" of the state of NRW, the idea was born to make the underground brine streams in Wittekindsland and Lipperland accessible above ground and thus connect the region's spas. The route covers a total of 91 km of the attractive landscape in the south-east of the district. It consists of the three sections "Kleinbahntrasse-Mittelachse", "südlicher Rundkurs" and "nördlicher Rundkurs", which can be ridden individually or combined with each other. This means that both enduring and sporty cyclists as well as inexperienced cyclists and families with children will find suitable sections.
The central axis presented here starts in Spenge, follows the old small railway line via Enger along the Bolldammbach stream to Hiddenhausen, continues through the "Füllenbruch" nature reserve to Herford, along the Werre to Bad Salzuflen and finally through the northern foothills of the Lipper Bergland to Vlotho. At its end, it forms the connection between the north and south courses. The "Kleinbahntrasse-Mittelachse" is a rather leisurely tour with only a few climbs in the section from Bad Salzuflen to Vlotho.Mostly independent, asphalted or gravel cycle paths are used. This makes this tour ideal for cyclists who are less fit, for families with children or simply for a relaxing cycle tour.

Directions
From Spenge with the Werburg and the Waldbad, the route heads east along the former narrow-gauge railway line. After the Enger Bruch nature reserve, you reach the town of Enger with its small railway museum. The route continues along the Bolldammbach stream through Belke-Steinbeck. At the sewage treatment plant, the route turns right and crosses the Oettinghauser Heide and the Füllenbruch nature reserve before reaching the town of Herford via Sundern. There, the route follows the town's historic ramparts and continues along the Werre to Bad Salzuflen, where various effects of the brine springs on the town are noticeable. From there, the route continues north through the Salzetal valley until it turns right shortly after the Caspohlquelle spring and reaches Eichholz via Krutheide and through the Glimketal valley. At the sports field near Exter, the route continues to the right via Hollwiesen and then reaches Vlotho, where the Weser harbor is located and the tour ends.
