Church

Herford Minster was the church of the imperial convent and the original parish church of Herford.

Built from 1220 under the abbess Gertrud II zur Lippe over an Ottonian predecessor building in the late Romanesque style, the cathedral is the first large hall church in northern Germany with high and late Gothic extensions in the dimensions of an episcopal church. The side aisles are just as high as the central nave, creating an impressive spatial effect. This building was the model for many church buildings of the same type and provided significant impetus for the spread of Gothic architecture.
