Linnenbauerplatz is home to the Linnenbauer monument, inaugurated in 1909, which commemorates the traditional linen production and linen trade that brought prosperity to Herford until the 17th century.
Deep below today's playground on the square is the site of the abbey's old watermill on the Bowerre, the "Mühlengericht". Until the 1960s, the Bowerre flowed through the middle of Herford and separated the old and new towns. From the 13th century until secularization in 1802, the mill was owned by the abbey and was under its jurisdiction - hence the name "Mühlengericht" (mill court).
The abbey mill was also demolished in 1972 when the old course of the Werre was redesigned and buried. The measure, which was already highly controversial at the time, was also carried out for reasons of poor water quality. Today, in times of sewage treatment plants and improved sewage pipes, this would no longer be a problem. However, by filling in the section of the river in the middle of the city, the groundwater level sank and still threatens the foundations of many houses today. From today's perspective, this intervention in the watercourse can be described as completely misguided - both in terms of urban planning and ecology! The tourist information office as the central point of contact for guests, visitors and citizens is located on Linnenbauerplatz in the city library building.
