This unsignposted circular route through Herford is a short, urban tour through the city's parks and over the old ramparts. This easy circular route is perfect for cyclists interested in the topic of monuments and is also suitable for inexperienced cyclists and families with children thanks to only one significant incline.

The route starts and ends at Herford train station.

This circular route is more like a city tour and is the shortest and easiest of the monument cycle routes in the district of Herford. From Herford train station, first ride past the bus station and follow the signs towards the city center. After two underpasses in quick succession, take the Wallrundweg towards Daniel-Pöppelmann-Haus. After the Hertabrücke bridge, cross the Aawiesenpark and reach the city cemetery on Hermannsstraße. After a short detour to the small Jewish cemetery, the path leads along the street "Unter den Linden" to the Werre (follow HF8). A few hundred meters upstream you reach the other side of the river via the foot and cycle bridge. The only ascent of this tour awaits you here - first up Parkstraße and then on through the park at Langenberg. At the top, you have the opportunity to take a breather and have a picnic on a quiet meadow. The route then takes you back down to the Werre via the Stiftberg with a detour to the municipal theater. Now follows a section through the historic old town of Herford. Numerous restaurants invite you to stop for a bite to eat. Finally, the route leads past the nationally renowned MARTa museum back to the station. The short 8.5 km route is mainly on paved cycle paths through parks or on asphalted side roads with only occasional traffic. As there is only one significant incline to contend with, the circular route is also suitable for less experienced cyclists or families with children. An alternative starting point is the parking lot at the municipal theater. However, it is also possible to set off from any point along the route. Herford station can be reached by Deutsche Bahn regional express trains from Bünde and Bad Oeynhausen. The Eurobahn between Bielefeld and Rahden (RB 71) completes the train connection. Bicycle transport is possible in each case (limited).

Further information on the route and the waypoints can be found on the Herford district cycling leisure website: www.fahr-im-kreis.de. A brochure is also available there as a free download.

Directions

From the train station, the route heads south along the city's old ramparts. After crossing the River Aa, the route turns right through the Aawiesenpark and leads to the cemeteries. The route then continues north along Friedhofstraße towards the town center, crossing the parking lot on the right-hand side to reach the old ramparts again and past the Haus unter den Linden until it reaches the Werre. There the route turns right and crosses the next bridge to the other side of the Werre. Once you reach Salzuflerstraße, you will find Parkstraße on the other side of the road about 50 meters further on the right, where you will find the route's one notable ascent. This leads past the Hochschule für Kirchenmusik and behind it on the right-hand side is the Langenberg. Through this park, you reach Stadtholzstraße, where the route continues to the left and at Vlothoerstraße it also continues to the left. Between the elementary school and the church, the route leads down the hill, turning right again over the Luttenberg about 20 meters after the church. After the Nordwestdeutsche Philharmonie (Northwest German Philharmonic Orchestra), the route continues downhill for approx. 100 meters into Visionstraße on the right-hand side. At the end of Visionsstraße, the route turns left along Gartenstraße to the municipal theater. At Mindener Straße, the route continues on the other side of the road towards Werre and the city center. After the bridge over the Werre, the route continues to the right along the old ramparts. At the next bridge over the Werre, the route turns left and crosses Berlinerstrasse. It then goes around St. Johanniskirche church and into the small alley opposite the bicycle shelter. You come out at Linnenbauerplatz. After crossing this square, the route continues to the right and then turns right again behind Herford Minster. After crossing Berlinerstrasse again, you reach Arndstrasse. At the traffic circle at the Elsbachhaus, the route continues to the right past the MARTa Museum and behind it to the left. Now just follow the railroad line to the left as far as the station and you have reached the starting point.
