The city had the exhibition wing built on the initiative of the Kunstverein, based on plans by architect Dieter Oesterlen. Since 1976, the Kunstverein has presented three to four art exhibitions here each year. The Municipal Museum uses the wing for historical exhibitions.
From 1874 to 1876, textile manufacturer Heinrich Schönfeld had this stately Neo-Renaissance villa built for himself and his family. Today, the Municipal Museum presents a modern, permanent exhibition on the city’s history in the 19th and 20th centuries in the rooms, which have been restored in accordance with historic preservation guidelines.
