The exhibition extension was built by the city on the initiative of the Kunstverein according to plans by architect Dieter Oesterlen. Since 1976, the Kunstverein has presented three to four art exhibitions here every year. The Städtisches Museum uses the extension for historical exhibitions.
The textile manufacturer Heinrich Schönfeld had the stately neo-Renaissance villa built for himself and his family between 1874 and 1876. Today, the municipal museum presents a modern permanent exhibition on the history of the city from the 19th and 20th centuries in the rooms, which have been restored to their original condition.
