After starting in the old Hanseatic town of Herford, the route heads out of town into the picturesque countryside of Wittekindsland. Sometimes the varied route takes you along well-maintained cycle paths, sometimes along asphalted country roads. Sometimes steeply uphill, but also downhill for longer periods, you will pass lush green meadows, forests and beautifully situated farmsteads. Take in the idyllic scenery and enjoy the unique view: in good weather, both the Teutoburg Forest and the Porta Westfalica, with the Weser breakthrough valley between the Wiehen and Weser mountains, can be seen on the horizon.
And with this panorama, how about a leisurely picnic amidst cornflowers and poppies or at one of the many rest stops along the way? It's not just the beauty of the local flora and fauna that is captivating. The view of Herford's gables and church towers in the distance is also particularly impressive.
The sporty part of the route begins around the Homberg. Enjoy the ascent and descent with numerous viewpoints that invite you to linger.Viewpoints
Out of town on Löhner Straße, the route runs along meadows and fields with a view of the nearby Werretal valley. Here, the route is predominantly flat
On the edge of the rural district of Falkendiek, the cycle route leads around the Homberg. At 201.2 meters high, the Homberg is the furthest north-western mountain in the Ravensberger Hügelland and marks the transition between the Ravensberger Hügelland and Lipper Bergland.
Following the Hombergstraße, the Ravensberger Hügelland makes itself felt in the truest sense of the word and at the same time promises wonderful views.
At the "Tiefer Weg" elevation at the "Heper Hof" hairpin bend, there is a short section of gravel road.
Following the route, you cross Mindener Straße. The route immediately climbs steeply into the mountains. The path rewards you for the ascent at the corner of Im Zuschläge and Alter Heerstraße with a distant view as far as the Teutoburg Forest. On the corner of Alte Heerstraße/Höhnerstraße, you can look out over Herford's church spires and the route slowly lives up to its name.
Following the alternative route, the path leads up to the transmitter via Hilligenböke on a passable dirt track. From this perspective, the view opens up towards Bielefeld over the Teutoburg Forest. Alternatively, you can take the direct route via Höhnerstraße.
The transmitter on the Eggeberg is 233 m high. For a long time, the church tower of St. Johannis in Neustadt was the tallest building in the city at 73 meters - until the first wind turbine with a blade height of 130 meters was built up here on the hill. In the immediate vicinity, a memorial commemorates the fallen of the First World War. The next panoramic view opens up from here. In good weather, you can see the Porta Westfalica and even the 88-metre-high Kaiser Wilhelm monument. The Porta Westfalica is a breakthrough valley of the Weser coming from the south through the Weser and Wiehengebirge mountains running in a west-easterly direction. The peaks in the city area are between 200 and just over 300 meters high. The Kaiser Wilhelm Monument is a memorial in honor of Kaiser Wilhelm I, who had the former Prussian province of Westphalia established. Via Senderstraße, the panoramic route leads along Vlothoer Straße on the edge of the Stuckenberg city forest. A short detour to the Bismarck Tower is recommended here. Built in 1906 in honour of the former Chancellor of the Reich, the observation tower on the Stuckenberg has a total height of 23 meters. In good weather, you can enjoy a magnificent panoramic view of the entire Ravensberg region as far as Porta Westfalica, Bielefeld and the Lippe and Detmold regions.Today, the "Freundeskreis Herforder Bismarckturm e. V." takes care of maintenance and upkeep and enables the following opening times: annually from April to October on the 1st, 3rd and 5th Sunday of the month and on public holidays from 10.00 to 18.00 (www.bismarckturm-herford.de).
Finally, following Vlothoer Straße into the city, a wonderful view of Herford's rooftops stretches out before you. A successful conclusion to an uphill and downhill ride of a special, sporty kind.
