Fürstenau Denkmal

Monument

On the Fürstenauplatz in front of the Jakobikirche has been home to the Fürstenaudenkmal since 1989, which is located at Anton Fürstenau, the protector of Herford in the Thirty Years' War and the defender of Reichsfreiheit against Brandenburg and the Great Elector. It was designed by Wolfgang Knorr.

Anton Fürstenau holds his right hand dismissively towards the Bielefeld Sparrenburg and thus against the Counts of Ravensburg, who were close to the Brandenburgers. With a great deal of negotiating skill and money, Fürstenau was able to prevent the capture and devastation of the town of Herford during the Thirty Years' War. With his left hand, he points to a document that guarantees the city of Herford imperial freedom. The head, divided several times, symbolizes the stages of his life, from a young, dynamic man to an old, worn-out one.
