A tour of the ramparts is possible from many stations. Herford was built on the fords at the mouth of the Werre and Aa rivers. A massive fortification system with a wall, five town gates and the rampart, which is still fully accessible today, stretched along the course of the rivers and the town ditches connecting them over a length of around 3.5 kilometers. A complete walk along the ramparts is well worthwhile: a viewing platform at the mouth of the moat and the Aa at the Steintorwall and several information boards at the Deichtorwall provide new insights. The Bowerre, which is now filled in, marks the original course of the Werre, while today's Werre was part of the city fortifications. From the Deichtor, the path led to Bielefeld, crossing the Aa via the Hertha Bridge and arriving in the Altstadt district.
