Nature discovery trail
New momentum for the straightened stream
The Bolldammbach was straightened in the 1960s and its banks were reinforced with stones. The rapid drainage of the water and the (dry) use of the meadows took precedence over near-natural development at the time. Since that time, numerous citizens have used the cycle and footpath along the stream. Many of them found the straight course of the stream with its wooded border and open meadow area to be beautiful and close to nature.

But appearances were deceptive. The straight course brought flood waves quickly and unchecked to Hiddenhausen. The floodplain was separated from the stream and could no longer fulfill its function as a habitat for animals and plants that require recurring flooding. Bank erosion, undercutting etc. had to be remedied by costly maintenance measures. Thanks to the diverse design of the stream and the surrounding area today, a number of animal and plant species will return, such as the kingfisher or fish species like the bullhead and minnow. A side effect is that a water retention volume of 10,000 m³ has been created, which benefits flood protection.
