But appearances were deceptive. The straight course brought flood waves quickly and unchecked to Hiddenhausen. The floodplain was separated from the stream and could no longer fulfill its function as a habitat for animals and plants that require recurring flooding. Bank erosion, undercutting etc. had to be remedied by costly maintenance measures. Thanks to the diverse design of the stream and the surrounding area today, a number of animal and plant species will return, such as the kingfisher or fish species like the bullhead and minnow. A side effect is that a water retention volume of 10,000 m³ has been created, which benefits flood protection.
