Monument
...and the valuable, medieval St. Martin's altar

St. Martin's Church and the community center built in 1980/81 are located in the center of Speng, directly on Lange Straße.
A good 100 years ago, the church was still located quite freely on the small hill, surrounded by the walled cemetery. This existed until 1877, since when only the new cemetery on the opposite side of Lange Straße has been used.
Today's St. Martin's Church was built in the second half of the 13th century.
The church's most important ornament is the 15th century altar of St. Martin, which has been back in the church since 1993. For many years, it was in the Westphalian State Museum of Art and Cultural History in Münster, until the parish succeeded in bringing the altar back into the church on permanent loan in 1993.

The Martinsaltar (also known as the Spenger Altar) is a particularly charming piece of medieval Westphalian wood carving. It depicts scenes from the Passion of Christ and an image from the legend in which St. Martin shares his coat with a beggar.
