The villa was built by cigar manufacturer Adalbert Grüter (1845-1913) and used for residential purposes. Adalbert Grüter, born in Bremen and a lawyer, had married the widowed Mrs. Steinmeister, owner of the "Steinmeister" cigar factory on the corner of Hangbaumstraße and Philippstraße in Bünde. After Adalbert Grüter's death in 1913, his only son Leopold (1882-1960) inherited the villa. After the end of the war, American and later British occupation troops occupied the building, finally leaving it in 1960 in a very poor structural condition. Rudolf Grüter, born in 1915, continued to run the "Steinmeister Ww.-Grüter" cigar factory together with his father Leopold until 1954. In 1960, a community of heirs sold the building to the Schumacher family, who built a hotel in it, because the renovation costs were too high. Today, the old villa is divided into several residential units and is a great place to live in a historic ambience.
