Storks in Tengern: A new home since 2012 - Traditional breeding areas in the 20th century

Until the 20th century, storks in the Minden-Lübbecke district traditionally only bred north of the Wiehengebirge. This region was considered the main breeding area for storks.

Private initiatives for new nesting opportunities

From the year 2000, however, private initiatives also created nesting opportunities south of the Wiehengebirge to provide storks with new breeding sites.

The nesting aid in Tengern

In Tengern, a 12-metre-high nesting aid was erected from an oak trunk in 2010 to provide storks with a suitable breeding site. This measure was an important step towards attracting storks here too.

First successful brood in 2012

The first successful brood was recorded in Tengern in 2012. The young stork that emerged from this breeding attempt was given a ring by the Helgoland Ornithological Institute.

A stork on a long journey

In January 2014, this young stork was recognized in the Madrid region, 1,624 kilometers away from Tengern. This was an impressive demonstration of how far a stork can travel.
