Backhaus Tengern: The local heritage association continues the old baking tradition of shared courtyard bakehouses.

Inauguration of the bakehouse in Tengern

In 1999, the Tengern-Huchzen local history association inaugurated the bakehouse on Schulstraße after three years of voluntary construction work. There is a large meeting room on the top floor and the heart of the building is on the first floor: the baking oven. If you look through the oven mouth into the oven, you can see a dome-shaped room, which is separated at the top by a clinker brick vault.

Structure and function of the oven

A thick layer of clay lies above the clinker brick vault, which serves as a heat reservoir during baking. The lower end of the oven consists of fireclay bricks that rest on a thick mixture of broken glass and sand, which also stores heat.

The baking process in the traditional oven

Before baking, wood is burned in the oven until the heat reservoirs are sufficiently heated. The ash is then removed and the bottom surface is wiped clean. The loaves of bread can then be inserted and baked.

Cultivating the baking tradition through the local heritage association

The Tengern-Huchzen local heritage association aims to revive the old tradition of baking bread and cakes in the region by baking in the bakehouse. On four public baking days a year, citizens have the opportunity to watch the baking process and try different types of bread, cakes, pizza and much more.
