300 kilometers of signposted cycle paths, idyllically situated along the Weser and the Wiehengebirge mountains, lead you through interesting moorland and farmland landscapes, pretty villages and lively small towns in the Mühlenkreis Minden-Lübbecke. What makes the district truly unique, however, are the 43 functioning windmills, water mills and horse mills as well as Germany's only millable ship mill.

In this collection, we present six day tours by bike that connect these historic buildings. The starting point for all tours is located so that you can easily arrive by train or car and then set off on your bike straight away.

In addition to our route suggestions and navigation with komoot, you can also cycle the day tours on the Mühlenroute according to junctions. The junction system supplements the red and white signposted cycle network. It is equipped with various numbered "junction hats" at certain signposts. These are clearly visible above the signposts.

Porta Westfalica lies where the Weser passes through the mountain gate between the Weser and Wiehengebirge mountains into the North German Plain. On this tour, you will cycle around this town and visit eight mills along the way. You will also gain a few meters in altitude as you cross the Weser and Wiehengebirge mountains. You can start anywhere along the route. For an easy journey by train, we have placed the starting point at Bad Oeynhausen station.

From here, you start your tour heading east towards the Weser. On the other side of the Weser, you can pay a visit to the first mill - the Holzhausen mill. Before you cross the Weser mountains to the north, you will pass three more mills. The terrain becomes noticeably more mountainous on this section.

In the north of Porta Westfalica, you cycle along level roads and cycle paths again. A detour to the Dützen mill is worthwhile, as the mill park, which is looked after by an association, is beautifully prepared and inviting. Shortly before the end of the tour, you can include a final detour to the Hofwassermühle mill, which is located at the Bad Oeynhausen museum farm.

On this route, you can use the junctions as a guide in the following order: 54-51-52-40-41-42-43-38-37-36-35-33-29-49-28-64-63-56-55-54
