The Herste herb and fruit tree nature trail - experience and understand nature
The herb and fruit tree nature trail in Herste is a true paradise for nature lovers, inquisitive minds and those seeking relaxation. Embedded in the picturesque landscape around Bad Driburg, it combines nature, knowledge and tranquillity in a unique way.
The project was created from 2008 under the direction of Antonius Oeynhausen, with the support of the Herste Local Heritage Association. The aim is to preserve the old fruit trees, plant new trees sustainably and at the same time pass on knowledge about local herbs and wild plants.
The 3.6-kilometre circular trail leads through a varied landscape in and to the north of Herste. Along the trail, there are numerous information signs that provide information about the respective fruit varieties, their special features and seasonal herbs - a harmonious combination of nature and education.
Maintenance of the nature trail includes:
Pruning, care and grafting of old and young fruit trees
New planting and variety identification
Installation of variety and herb signs
Installation of nesting boxes
Regular, seasonally adapted signposting of herbs
Guided walks with expert explanations
The nature trail currently includes 132 fruit trees - of which 85 are old stands and 47 are new plantings. Many of these trees and herbs are known not only for their taste, but also for their healing properties.
A walk along the nature trail invites you to slow down, enjoy the scent of nature and discover the secrets of the local flora. The peaceful surroundings make it an ideal place to escape from everyday life, take a deep breath and gather new impressions.
A visit is not only an enrichment of knowledge, but also balm for the soul.

The starting point is Bad Driburg (zip code 33014). From there, first drive to Dringenberger Straße. Then follow the B64 and Heristiestraße in the direction of Herste until you reach Dorfstraße/Urbanusstraße.
From there, continue along Ortbergstraße. At the start of Ortbergstraße is the entrance to the herb and fruit tree nature trail - a natural experience that combines knowledge and relaxation.
By bus:
If you prefer to take the bus, get off in Bad Driburg at the "Bad Driburg, Gymnasium St. Xaver" stop and take the 570 line in the direction of "Brakel, Bahnhof". Get off at the "Bad Driburg-Herste, Mitte" stop. From there it is about a 25-minute walk to the start of the herb and fruit tree nature trail.
