There is a special work of art in the Protestant church in Schlangen: a mural of St. Christopher, which is the oldest known depiction of this saint in Westphalia. St. Christopher is considered the patron saint of travelers. This painting was applied to the dry mortar in the church tower in the middle of the 13th century using lime paint in the so-called "seco-technique".
The mural is located on the south wall of the vaulted tower room of the Schlangen church. It was rediscovered by chance during renovation work in 1970 and has been an important testimony to medieval art ever since.
