Gasthaus Zum Kukuk
Of course, historical elements play a role in the cozy decor, although the hostess, Sonja Kukuk, is gradually “dusting off” the rooms and giving them a more contemporary look with a keen eye and great sensitivity. The “Kutscherstube,” now featuring a lighter country-house design, is a good example of this gentle modernization.
The Kukuks are a family with deep local roots; their ancestors were settled and self-defensive farmers, as evidenced by the family coat of arms featuring armor, a shield, and a wolf’s hook. Since 1596—the cornerstone can still be seen in the old farmhouse—this former coachmen’s tavern across from the church has been in the family’s possession; it is also the birthplace of Fritz Kukuk (1905–1987), a local poet known far beyond the region. Numerous works commemorate the Low German writer and poet.
It’s no wonder that in Himmighausen, with this sense of history and tradition, regional products also play a major role. First and foremost, of course—as is often the case in this area—is Nieheim cheese. The menu ranges from Nieheim cheese soup to Nieheim Krüstchen and Nieheim cheese schnitzel, all the way to the Nieheim cheese steak.
Speaking of steaks: The Kukuks are famous for their tender and juicy roast beef and beef tenderloin steaks, available in portions ranging from 200 to 400 grams. That’s because the meat comes from a local butcher who sources only from regional farmers. And many regulars treat themselves to game specialties in the fall. Anyone who feels they need a little something to aid digestion after these hearty dishes should definitely try the house-made, dry herbal schnapps “Kukuk’s Kutscherschluck.”
We would be delighted to welcome you to our old half-timbered house and hope you’ll enjoy it just as much as the guest who
described his feelings in the following verse:
Anyone who’s ever sat here will never again say
they want to send someone “to the cuckoo,”
unless, of course, they’re referring to
the Kutscherstuben at “Kukuks” for a friend.
