The Widukind Fountain is located on Barmeierplatz in the center of the city. It symbolizes Saxonism between the belief in gods and Christianity. The bubbling stone column refers to the legendary Irminsul ("Great Column"), the sanctuary of the Saxons. The soaring columns symbolize a crown of buds, which is intended to commemorate Queen Mathilde, who was born in Enger in 895. She was the wife of Henry I, descendant of Widukind and founder of the Dionysius monastery in Enger. On the crown is a depiction of the Saxon Duke Widukind on horseback on his historic journey to his baptism in Attigny. Bronze plaques on the sides of the basin depict ten different Widukind legends.
The small town of Attigny in the French Ardennes was one of Charlemagne's favorite residences in the 8th century. Widukind's baptism in the imperial palace in 785 sealed his submission and also established his legendary reputation.
Only 200 years later, the castle in Attigny disappeared from the map following armed conflicts.
