It is still unclear whether the unknown artist actually depicted Widukind. In any case, the inscription on the plinth does not mention his name. The canons in Enger, however, had been emphatically cultivating the Widukind tradition since the early 13th century and endeavored to present the bones of a founder. In 1414, human remains known as Widukind's remains were brought to Herford. Today, they lie in the wooden shrine of the Gothic altar behind the altar in the collegiate church in Enger.
The church square with its circular residential buildings gives the town a distinctive center and spatial structure. We in Enger call it the "church roundel". This is where the town originated. The many listed buildings give the Rundling a very special romantic flair. In summer, the old trees create shady spots that invite you to linger and form an oasis of calm in the midst of the urban hustle and bustle. The ring-shaped development of the church square creates a very special, almost hall-like acoustic. This is why the square is often used by musicians and serves as a romantic backdrop for the "Advent stroll" (Christmas market). Every two years, the museum festival attracts visitors to the church square, alternating with the music spectacle "Enger klingt".
