Nature discovery trail
Grass paths, pollarded willows, field birds and grazing

A centuries-old cultural landscape has developed in the damp depression of the Werfener Bruch. Before humans settled in the Else valley, there was a wet, riverine forest here, consisting mainly of alders, willows and oaks. Despite the clearing of the trees in recent centuries, new valuable habitats for plants and animals have been created by cultivating the land as pastureland.

Many grass paths connect the small arable fields with the surrounding grassland, where real cows still graze comfortably on the pastures. Valuable habitat for the last of their kind: the little owls! The smallest owl in the region still nests here in old fruit trees and pollarded willows or in one of the many nesting boxes, which are hung up and looked after by hard-working volunteers in collaboration with the Biological Station.

A slight elevation between the Werfener Buch and the Else sets itself apart from the lowlands: The so-called "Ohrhagen", a beautiful hunting ground for partridges and skylarks.
