Tobacco monument in the shape of the two legendary "cigar barons"
The monument with the two cigar smokers commemorates the two citizens of Bünde, August Steinmeister and Tönnies Wellensiek, who brought the business of cigar production to the town between 1842 and 1843. They brought work and prosperity to Bünde for generations. After flourishing around 1900 and declining in the 1960s, there are still three cigar factories in Bünde today - and traditional businesses like that of fifth-generation pipe maker Pollner, just a few steps from here. As recently as 1935, over 10,000 people were employed in 258 cigar factories in Bünde.
