Kunstmuseum im Marstall
The Kunstmuseum im Marstall houses the municipal art collections and exhibits outstanding groups of 20th century paintings and graphic works as well as contemporary works by important artists, particularly from the region. A particular focus is on the extensive collection of works by the Paderborn painter Willy Lucas, whose oeuvre is regarded as an independent contribution to late Impressionism. There are also prints by artists such as Max Beckmann, E. L. Kirchner and Emil Nolde, as well as avant-garde collages by the artist couple Ella Bergmann and Robert Michel.
The collection is complemented by paintings, prints and sculptures by contemporary artists as well as the historical Nachtmann ceramics and glass collection, which is presented in a separate part of the building. The exhibitions change regularly and focus on different themes - thus creating a new perspective on art time and time again.
The museum itself is located in the historic stables, which were built between 1729 and 1732 under the direction of court architect Franz Christoph Nagel as horse stables. After its use as a garrison building and historical museum, the baroque building was given a new purpose as an art and natural history museum in 2016 - a place where history and art come together in a lively way.
