Built in the Paderborn district of the same name, the former prince-bishop's residence Schloß Neuhaus is one of the most important moated castles in Westphalia. The origins of the castle date back to the 14th century. However, it was only in the 16th century that it was extended to its present four-winged complex with round corner towers and moat.
Neuhaus Castle is therefore one of the early works and thus one of the most important examples of the Weser Renaissance. Neuhaus Castle was the residence of the Paderborn prince-bishops until 1802. The castle and its outbuildings were thoroughly restored for the 1994 State Garden Show.

The Residence Museum is located in the historic Remter and the castle's state rooms. The baroque stables from the 18th century were given a completely new function with the establishment of the Museums of Natural History and Art. Together with its outbuildings and baroque garden, the palace forms the center of the palace and meadow park (site of the 1994 State Garden Show), where the palace summer takes place from May to October with a variety of cultural events.
