Animal lovers of all ages can now find answers to these and similar questions using the new bat detector at Dedinger-Heide-See in Bad Lippspringe. The Paderborn-Senne District Biological Station installed the device in collaboration with the city administration. It is the only one of its kind in the entire OWL region.
The function of the solar-powered detector is easy to explain: It picks up the sound waves from bat calls and then reproduces them at an audible frequency. Interested residents should visit the detector at dusk and wait quietly for a while to see if the bats make themselves known. If they don’t, the device can also play back previously recorded sounds. The device also provides other fascinating details about these nocturnal animals.
