Lecture: A Look Into (and Out of) the Herzebrock Monastery – Obituaries and Memoir Book

On Monday, November 23, at 7:00 p.m., the Herzebrock Local History Association invites you to a lecture by local historian and archival expert Jan Althöfer at the Herzebrock Parish Center (Am Kirchplatz 2).
The old convents in Westphalia and elsewhere owed their extensive holdings, their rights, and the resulting position of great power—until secularization—to pious endowments, primarily from members of the nobility; the Herzebrock Convent was no exception. In gratitude for these endowments, the nuns included their benefactors in their prayers, thus praying continually for the salvation of their souls. To ensure, across generations, that no one would be undeservedly forgotten and that prayers would be offered for everyone at the right time, a prayer calendar was created and maintained as early as the Middle Ages, in which the relevant names were entered, often accompanied by precise details of what was owed to them. In addition to these benefactors, many servants of the convent as well as various other individuals were also recorded, making this little book—which at first glance appears unremarkable—a valuable source for local history and an interesting resource for genealogical research. The lecture will shed light on its eventful history and, using specific examples, demonstrate what can be discovered within its pages.
The venue is accessible to people with disabilities; participation in the event, which lasts about one and a half hours, is free and does not require registration; donations are welcome.
