After the Second World War, Jewish architect László Tóth (Adrien Brody) emigrates to the USA to build a new life. He initially finds shelter with his cousin Attila (Alessandro Nivola) and works in his furniture store. When they are commissioned to redesign the library of the powerful Harrison Lee Van Buren (Guy Pearce), László senses his chance. But the plan fails as the rich magnate knows nothing about it and throws them both out. Attila blames László and puts him on the street, where the immigrant slips deeper and deeper into his morphine addiction. A complete collapse seems inevitable; the dream of catching up with his wife Erzsébet (Felicity Jones), from whom he was separated in the turmoil of the war, seems a distant prospect - until he meets Van Buren again. In the meantime, he has learned of László's great reputation as an architect in old Europe and offers him the opportunity to realize a unique, monumental project.
