Alma Olsson (Julia Roberts) is a philosophy professor at the elite American university Yale. A tenured professorship is within her grasp, but then everything threatens to topple or at least falter in the final meters. One night, Maggie Price (Ayo Edebiri), one of Alma's doctoral students, turns up at the door in complete disarray. She reports how her fellow student Hank Gibson (Andrew Garfield) sexually assaulted her on the way home from a party. However, Alma's reflex is not to assure Maggie of her unreserved solidarity, but rather not to make a big deal out of the matter for the time being. After all, regardless of whether Maggie has told the truth or not, the professor feels that her lifetime appointment is in jeopardy if she goes ahead with the case. The case ultimately leads to a repressed and never-processed event from Alma's past, which even her psychotherapist husband Frederik (Michael Stuhlbarg) was unable to help her with, forcing its way back to the surface.
