The American James Larkin White (Albrecht Schuch) finds himself in an unexpected situation in Switzerland when he is mistaken for the sculptor Anatol Ludwig Stiller (Sven Schelker), who disappeared several years ago and is arrested for being involved in a political affair. Contrary to the authorities' claims, James is adamant that he is in fact James White and not Stiller. During the investigation, Anatol Stiller's wife, Julika Stiller-Tschudy (Paula Beer), is also called in. She is supposed to check for the public prosecutor's office whether James really is who he claims to be. What neither of them expect is that a close relationship will actually develop between them. As the two grow closer, more and more questions arise about the true identity of the mysterious American. Based on the novel of the same name by Max Frisch.
