In his early 30s, Bruce Springsteen (Jeremy Allen White) finds himself at a crossroads in his life. After releasing five albums so far, his musical success has more than come to an end in 1982. At least in the United States, he has long been a well-known rock star with several celebrated chart hits, and yet he is not on the sunny side of life - quite the opposite, as Springsteen is battling depression, i.e. all kinds of inner demons. He decides to deal with this struggle through his art. So, together with a simple four-track recorder, he locks himself in his bedroom and starts working - on himself and on a new album, which he would eventually christen "Nebraska". The result is an extremely gloomy record, which even those around Springsteen - including his manager Jon Landau (Jeremy Strong) and his studio team including producer Chuck Plotkin (Marc Maron) and sound engineer Mike Batlan (Paul Walter Hauser) - struggle with in places.
