The building that now houses the Theater Am Alten Markt looks back on a long history as the former historic town hall. Unfortunately, there is no record of when the foundation stone for the former town hall building was laid. What is certain, however, is that the historic cellar vault with the coat of arms keystones is much older than the year 1538 found in the ceiling area initially suggests. It is assumed that the move of the council and the majority of the administration to the "New Town Hall" in 1904 on today's Niederwall marked the end of more than 400 years of use as a town hall. This was followed by further uses as a public library, a house of international understanding, a speech theater and, last but not least, an adult education center. Today, it is another location of the theater.
