F. Sagebiel pointed out as early as 1973 in his informative book "Baumeister in und um Corvey" that the Wehrden church "already stands out from the other village churches" due to the "vaulting and porch" of the three-aisled west building.
Ambrosius von Oelde's achievement is primarily reflected in the façade and portal architecture, as the interior of the church is quite simple: just a simple rectangular hall under a massive-looking cross vault with ridges and keystones.
According to Karl-Josef Schmitz ("Grundlagen und Anfänge barocker Kirchenbaukunst in Westfalen", Paderborn 1969), the interior design of the Wehrden church is almost identical to the interior of the Capuchin church in Paderborn, and the church in Schloss Neuhaus may also have provided inspiration.
However, the magnificent baroque altar clearly stands out from the simple church building. Surrounded by carved columns with coats of arms, paintings and figures, it is an example of the Baroque play of forms, which had a preference for curves and bends. The precious altarpiece by Johann Georg Rudolphi depicts the "Holy Family" - a theme that developed from the "Flight into Egypt" motif and was a popular subject until around the 17th century.
