The Wildberg rises steeply between the villages of Amelunxen, Wehrden and Blankenau and separates the Weser and Nethe valleys, which merge a little further north.
The forests on the Wildberg are largely under nature conservation and are part of the European NATURA 2000 network of protected areas. The high beech forests with their typical woodruff or orchid undergrowth cover a large area. This special habitat is home to the red kite and black kite. The large birds of prey can often be seen circling over the fields in the Weser and Nethe valleys. The V-shaped tail tips are particularly striking.
The trail also leads through spruce stands plagued by heat and bark beetles. Here in these areas, you can continuously observe the changes in these forest areas. The affected trees are currently being removed and the areas reforested over the years. The open areas open up new views that were previously blocked by dense forests.
