In fact, Würgassen was originally called Wirrigsen, which can probably be linked to the terms "Wirura" (Weser) and "Gisen" (to bubble up). At the beginning of the 20th century, the Weser near Würgassen was still criss-crossed by rocks that caused the water to flow turbulently.
In the past, the inhabitants who did not work in agriculture were mainly employed as sailors in the Weser shipping industry. In the 1970s, many were employed in the newly built nuclear power plant, which was decommissioned in 1995 and is currently being dismantled.
One special feature is the location on the right bank of the Weser, which means that Würgassen should actually belong to Lower Saxony. A long dispute over the course of the state border was only settled in 1837. And even today, the shooting range of the shooting fraternity is still partly on Westphalian and partly on Lower Saxon territory.
