Nature discovery trail
A popular excursion destination for Paderborn residents with numerous leisure activities on offer
Numerous leisure activities make the 160-hectare Haxtergrund forest park a popular excursion destination for the people of Paderborn. At its heart is the valley of the Ellerbach stream, which rarely carries water and whose steep slopes are cut deep into the limestone of the Paderborn plateau. An educational geocaching trail, two playgrounds and the forest adventure school round off the varied offer. The Haxtergrund is also the starting point of the Old Pilgrims' Trail, a hiking trail with a pilgrimage character. Two cozy restaurants invite you to linger.
The Haxtergrund is also home to the Paderborn Arboretum, where around 40 native and exotic tree species have found their home. Every year on Arbor Day (April 25), the respective "Tree of the Year" is planted.
Above the Haxtergrund is the Haxterberg airfield, from where you can enjoy a great view of Paderborn and across the Senne to the Teutoburg Forest. In warm weather, the spacious sun terrace of the Wolke 7 restaurant-café invites you to watch the gliders and motorized planes take off and land.
