Museum/Exhibition

The Ahlers Pro Arte Foundation was established in Herford in 1995 by the textile manufacturer Jan A. Ahlers and his daughter Dr Stella A. Ahlers as a non-profit limited company.

The foundation promotes visual arts, literature and music. Its main task is to research and scientifically document the influence that German Expressionism had on the further development of art in the 20th and 21st centuries.

In 2005, the foundation moved into the historically significant building at Warmbüchenstraße 16 in Hanover, the headquarters of the Kestnergesellschaft from 1948 to 1997. For decades, important impulses for the dissemination and reception of contemporary art in German-speaking countries had emanated from here. The Ahlers Pro Arte Foundation continued this tradition with exhibitions, lectures, readings and music evenings. In autumn 2016, the foundation moved its headquarters to Herford. This did not entail a change in the organisation's focus and objectives. In December 2016, the foundation introduced itself at its new location with two lecture events, and the first exhibition was opened in September 2017. Since then, the foundation has organised high-calibre exhibitions, lectures, music evenings and readings, to which renowned academics, curators and musicians from all over Germany have contributed.

The current events can be found on the website.
