Waters

Excursion destination with high recreational value.

The Obersee, which was created in 1982 on the border between Schildesche and Jöllenbeck, is the main attraction of an 80-hectare green area and, together with the Johannisbachaue in the Heepen district, is one of Bielefeld's most important local recreation areas.

With 15 hectares, it is the largest water area in the city and is open all year round. Water, walking paths, restaurants, mini golf, playgrounds and many events guarantee a high recreational value.

The area around the Obersee has developed into an ornithologically valuable area despite the high number of visitors.

In 2009, the Obersee was once again given a flowing Johannisbach stream on its green north side; the ecological continuity of the watercourse was restored. The amount of silt entering the Obersee from the Johannisbach will be significantly reduced in future. The next desilting will not be necessary for well over 50 years.
