Lichtenturm (Haxter Warte) near Paderborn
The Lichtenturm—also known as the Haxter Warte—is part of the medieval “Warte,” a defensive and surveillance structure that surrounded the city of Paderborn within a wide radius.
Natural obstacles such as rivers and streams were supplemented by dense hedges, palisades, and ramparts, as well as watchtowers—often built on ridges within sight of one another to improve all-around visibility. The Warte could not hold back a determined enemy but rather served as an “early warning system” for the city’s actual defenses.
