Since its completion in 1836, the house on Oberntorwall has served as an upper-class villa and from 1904 as a commercial building. In 1930, the administration of the Chamber of Crafts moved in. In 2015, the neoclassical villa became the property of the Goldbeck Foundation. This laid the foundation stone for the Museum Kunstforum Hermann Stenner, which celebrated its opening on January 20, 2019.
The Kunstforum Hermann Stenner invites visitors to an open encounter with the visual arts of the 20th century. The starting point for this is the Bielefeld artist Hermann Stenner (1891- 1914) as a representative of classical modernism. However, the Kunstforum Hermann Stenner is also open to subsequent generations of artists, including contemporary art.
The Kunstforum Hermann Stenner, together with the Kunsthalle Bielefeld, the Bielefelder Kunstverein im Waldhof and many other actors, is a lively part of Bielefeld's culture. It also sees itself as a place of learning and a forum for diverse exchange. Its tasks include the presentation, mediation and academic examination of artistic content. The aim is to arouse interest in art, to relate past and present and to contribute to Bielefeld's cultural identity. The roots of the Kunstforum Hermann Stenner lie in the civic commitment in the tradition of the Bielefeld museum system.
