History of ownership of the moated castle
The von Westrup family - feudatories of the Bishops of Minden and the Counts of Tecklenburg - have owned the estate since the early 15th century. In 1620, the estate passed to Dietrich von der Recke from the House of Steinfurt through the marriage of the heiress Margarete von Westrup. After the marriage of his son Wilhelm von der Recke to Anna Catharina von Steding (see portal coat of arms), the castle complex was extended over a period of more than 30 years to its present form: the two barns were completed in 1660 and 1670, the gatehouse in 1672 and the manor house in 1699.

Special features of the castle complex
Noteworthy are the pigeon tower, the surviving devices of the former drawbridge and the bell tower on the gatehouse.
Restoration and current use
In 1979, Gut Stockhausen was sold by Gerhard von der Recke to Anne and Dr. Hans Werner Schürmann. They restored the estate, which was threatened by decay and has been a listed building since 1983, in line with its status as a historical monument. The manor house and outbuildings are used privately. The farm can be visited.
