The history of Stapelage is inextricably linked to the estate and the church. Both form the origins of the village. According to current knowledge, the Stapelage farm already existed in Saxon times. It was located on today's vicarage (including the current parking lot).
Stapelage was an important place with a count's court, as evidenced by the place name. "Stapel" used to refer to the old count's courts, which can be found in many places along the Hellweg. "lage" denotes a specific place. Consequently, Stapelage means: place of the count's court. As Carolingian imperial property, the estate came into the possession of the imperial monastery of Werden near Essen, founded in 797. The estate later became the property of the Counts of Schwalenberg, who donated it to Marienfeld Abbey in 1185.
On the currentparking lot stood the castle-like main building with a floor area of 26m x 26m with an inner courtyard and fountain. The main building dates back to around 1000 and replaced an older wooden structure. After its final destruction in the Thirty Years' War (1637), the courtyard was moved to its current location.Good to know
