It was built for motorized aircraft, but is now mainly used for gliding. The area is 109 hectares in size and was opened in 1934. In the past, the airfield was a restricted military area. Parts of the complex were blown up before the Allied invasion in March 1945. The airfield was under British control until the 1990s before it was released for civilian use.
Detmold airfield is now used by LSV Detmold (Detmold Air Sports Club). Visitors and interested parties are always welcome and even have the opportunity to fly along.
