Engelbert-Kämpfer-Denkmal

  • Monument

The Engelbert Kaempfer Monument stands on the Hoher Wall. It was dedicated in 1867 and commemorates Engelbert Kaempfer, who was born in Lemgo. He was a physician, researcher, and traveler. He became particularly well-known for his journey to Japan.

The monument is a tall pillar. At the top, it has a structure reminiscent of a Japanese pagoda. There are several inscriptions on the monument. They tell of Kaempfer’s travels and his work as a researcher.

The monument also bears his motto, “Virtuti nihil invium.” This roughly translates to: “Nothing is impossible for a capable person.”

Next to the monument stands a Japanese memorial stone. It was erected in 1973 and commemorates Kaempfer’s connection to Japan.

Today, the monument is a stop on the Engelbert Kaempfer Walking Tour and commemorates one of Lemgo’s most famous sons.
