Christmas concert of the vocal ensemble of the Detmold University of Music "Pop-Up"

Pop and jazz for the Christmas festival will be offered on the evening before Nikolaustag, Saturday, December 5 at 6 p.m. by students of the Detmold University of Music under the direction of Prof. Anne Kohler in the church at Bergkirchen. Rhythmically captivating, sonically brilliant, and harmonically colorful, the singers of "Pop-Up" present songs from their varied repertoire. "Pop-Up" lets old melodies resonate in simple beauty, spices them rhythmically with wit and insight, and takes listeners on a surprising evening full of musical anticipation for the festival. "Pop-Up" is the vocal ensemble of the Detmold University of Music, whose repertoire is widely ranged with jazz standards, pop classics, and legendary songwriters. Pop-Up has been a guest at festivals in Cologne and Aarhus (DK) and performed in October 2012 together with the Rolling Stones in the Esprit Arena in Düsseldorf. Pop-Up achieved two first prizes at national and international competitions in 2018 and published several CDs.

In June 2025, Pop-Up won the first prize at the German Choir Festival in Nuremberg.

Admission tickets for €10/15/20/25/30 can be ordered starting November 9 at karten@bergkirchen.net or purchased at the box office starting at 5 p.m. More information can be found at www.bergkirchen.net

Pop-Up is the 32-member vocal ensemble of the Detmold University of Music. Vocal arrangements of pop songs, jazz standards, gospels, and songwriter titles form the group's repertoire, whose members study in the fields of school music, conducting, singing, sound engineering, and music education. Pop-Up enjoys rhythm, vocal soundscapes, and colorful harmonizing. At the core of their work is the interest in exciting arrangements, the search for a homogeneous choir sound, and the joy of musical togetherness. Pop-Up was founded in 2010 by its conductor Anne Kohler and won the "Young Art" award from Volksbank-Paderborn-Höxter-Detmold in 2012. The ensemble participated in the Voc.Cologne and the Aarhus Vocal Festival (DK) in 2013 and sang as the background choir for the Rolling Stones in the Düsseldorf ESPRIT Arena in front of 50,000 listeners in June 2014. Pop-Up was able to achieve two first prizes at national and international competitions this year and will release its third CD in early December.

Anne Kohler studied school music, singing, and conducting at the Hamburg University of Music and Theatre and the Karlsruhe University of Music. Since 2009, she has been a professor of choral conducting at the Detmold University of Music. There, she conducts the university's chamber choir as well as the jazz vocal ensemble "Pop-Up" and supervises a major class of choral conductors. She deepened her education in masterclasses with Eric Ericsson, Frieder Bernius, Volker Hempfling, Tonu Kaljuste, Jens Johannsen, and members of the "Real Group." Since September 2012, she has been a guest multiple times with the SWR Vocal Ensemble in Stuttgart for productions and rehearsals for Marcus Creed, Pierre Boulez, and Roger Norrington.
