Donopbrunnen

Monument
In the middle of the market square is the Donop Fountain (created in 1902 by the Dresden master craftsman Hölbe), whose romantic bronze group is reminiscent of the Berlebecke river, which rises in the Lippe Forest and ensures Detmold's water supply.
Until the end of the 19th century, the Werre and many fountains in Detmold were heavily polluted. The fountain donated by Auguste von Donop in 1883 marked the end of this state of affairs. The nymph in the central group of figures can be understood as a situated personification of the fountain's source, as it draws its water from the Berlebecke springs in the middle of the Teutoburg Forest south of the town. During the Second World War, the fountain escaped being melted down by chance and was rediscovered in a Hamburg bell cemetery around 1947. However, it was not re-dedicated in its old location until 1951 after many years of discussion about a new concept for the market square.
