Alter Bahnhof Brake

  • Monument

In the fall of 1996, the city of Lemgo acquired the decommissioned, historic old train station in the Brake district of Lemgo. The station’s former freight handling area was converted into an architectural office.

The renovation was carried out in accordance with historic preservation principles, with minimal alterations to the building’s original structure. The only new addition to the freight shed is the vestibule, constructed of steel, sheet metal, and glass. The roof structure, the brickwork of the gable walls, and the exposed concrete ceilings in the basement have been preserved in their original condition; the charm of the old train station can be experienced in many details.

The deliberately understated interior design, featuring steel cabinets and industrial shelving, underscores the building’s character. Between the old sliding gates, large glass cubes—like containers ready for pickup—protrude from the existing openings, offering magnificent views of the adjacent scenic conservation area. During the renovation, great care was taken to ensure that all new elements were clearly recognizable as such, while incorporating modern design techniques.

Today, more than 25 years later, the architectural language of this building—particularly the combination of historic and modern elements—is still considered current and contemporary.
