On the 30.3 km long Viadukt hiking trail, Altenbeken's landmark, the large railroad viaduct, is skillfully showcased. The viaduct hiking trail has been a "Wanderbares Deutschland" quality trail since 2009. If you dreamed of being an engine driver in a snorting steam locomotive when you were a child, you can continue to cherish this dream on the viaduct hiking trail in Altenbeken. You will encounter railroads time and again along the way. And where could a railway-themed hike begin or end more appropriately than at a historic steam locomotive? The heavy freight train steam locomotive 044 389-5 was built in 1941 and has stood as a monument in the heart of the railroad community of Altenbeken since 1971.
The viaduct hiking trail is, of course, clearly signposted in both directions with no gaps. So you can decide how you want to start your tour. In any case, the circular route guarantees an exceptional hiking experience. Don't forget to take a punch card with you. You can validate it at five stations along the way and receive a certificate and hiking pin after a successful hike.

Directions
The starting point of the hike is the steam locomotive at the Eggemuseum. After a short climb past the Mühlenbach stream, you will reach the viewing platform at the viaduct. Here you have a great view of the impressive structure. Tip: descend the steps at the viaduct, cross under the bridge and turn right. After about 100 meters you will reach the Vista Point with an original information board. Here, the viaduct has been "laid on its side" and offers a great rest and photo perspective (back as you came).
From the vista point, continue to the Kalkofen parking lot, then steeply uphill to the right and then right along the meadow path with beautiful views of the Eggegebirge mountains and the Frankental valley. Continue to the forest, down the "Ziegenpatt" into the Frankental valley.
Cross the country road here and continue right through the forest to the Sagebornquelle spring. Continue along a farm track to the Rehberg tunnel with a view of the tunnel portal. Then turn right along the grassy path to the transformer station with great views of the railroad station, viaduct and village.
Continue left down Ahornstraße to the Bollerbornquelle spring. Follow a forest path to Eggering, along the residential buildings to the "Driburger Grund" leisure facility. Follow the path for approx. 700 m and be sure to make a detour to the idyllic Max-und-Moritz spring 150 m away, then take the farm track back to Driburger Grund, past the shooting range and up into the forest along the railroad line to Hossengrund.
From there, follow the A2, over the Reelsberg to the "Am Springe" pond, through the road tunnel and continue left to the edge of the forest. Then turn right onto a forest path to Heinrich-Mertens-Platz. From here, turn right to the old Buke railroad station.
Cross the railroad line and you will reach the L 828 towards Altenbeken. Continue right and after 100 m cross the road and turn left towards Krukenwiesen. Cross the bridge to Schützenplatz, turn right through the tunnel to Eichborn and continue to the Mariengrotte grotto with wayside shrine. Continue along Buker Dorfstraße, past the farm café, after 200 m turn right towards Buker Feldmark (Rühenfeld).
From there turn left to the crossroads (Flachen Feld), turn left here and after 200 m turn right onto a farm track above the shooting range. At the end of the path, turn left down the steps at the shooting range to the Dunetal inn.
Through the beautiful Dunetal valley to the small viaduct. Tip: Be sure to make a detour to the viewing platform here (straight ahead to the refuge, take the forest path steeply uphill to the right, then back). The path leads slightly uphill to the right into Schlonegrund.
After the railroad underpass, you will come to the L755, follow the path to the right to the steps and cross the L755. Continue to the bridge, then turn right and after 200 m turn left and follow the forest nature trail to the parking lot and continue into the beautiful Durbeke valley. Then turn left after approx. 200 m, it is worth making a detour to the Madonna am Walde. Then follow the Melkepatt steeply uphill to the right to "Drei Linden" with a great view.
Descend to the Kalkofen parking lot, follow the path to the viewing platform on the right, continue to the railroad underpass and then turn right over the steps to the Mühlenbach stream and back to the Eggemuseum.
