Hikers cross a narrow footbridge to reach the small spring area, which is surrounded by forest and nature. The water emerges from the rocky ground in several places and collects in a small pond. The spring basin was formed more than 400 years ago by an open-pit mine tunnel dating back to the era of iron mining.
The spring’s unusual name also has its own story: Two railroad workers from Altenbeken are said to have regularly visited the spot to take a break. In the village, the two were known as the merry duo “Max and Moritz”—and that’s how the spring got its name. Today, this idyllic spot offers a lovely opportunity to take a break along the Viaduct Hiking Trail.
